Marius Bauer (Dutch 1867-1932)

Typical scribbly sketches from this prolific Dutch artist who travelled widely in India and the East. Born in the Hague of a father interested in art he attended the Aacademy of Art where he developed a lifelong interest in the East. His many small etched sketches were initially not editioned, and it was not until 1902 that the printer van Wisselingh produced formal editions of the 135 or so plates that remained in good enough condition to use. In the following 10-15 years he produced a prodigious number of large oils and watercolours with the occasional large etching (usually small editions). His last trip to India in 1923 saw him return to etching in quantity, producing a further series of 'small plates' in 1925 (19 in all).

Saddhus Squatting, Benares, India. 1925. Edition probably 100. 137mmx55mm W264.
It's listed elsewhere as Fakirs Squatting, but this copy has it crossed out and Saddhus added instead.
