Ralph Middleton Todd (British 1891-1966)
Three Drypoints by another forgotten master of portraiture. The son of a painter, born in Helston, Cornwall,
he studied under Stanhope Forbes at Newlyn and then the Slade. From the mid 1930's he taught art at a variety
of institutions including the Royal Academy. A respected Painter and Draughtsman, he was described as 'by far
the most sensitive and accomplished painter of his generation....modest and unambitious'. These portraits are
typical and come from a large batch of 50 or so trial proofs sold at auction last year, presumably originally
from his estate. Most featured the same three west-country characters - peripatetic musicians with well worn
features. Todds can be picked up for prices that are distressingly cheap considering their quality.
