Ethelbert White (British 1891-1972)
Painter in oil, watercolour, etcher, wood engraver, illustrator, poster designer. Son of eccentric
bohemian parents who travelled the country by caravan collecting and singing folk songs, attended St
Johns Wood Art School and was a good friend of Nevinson. Commissioned by Robert Gibbings to illustrated
a number of the Penguin Illustrated Classics with several other notable wood engravers. Travelled widely
and exhibited regularly, his love of the countryside is evident in much of his work.
