Pre-Raphaelite painter William Holman Hunt is best known for his allegorical pictures such as The Scapegoat, Our English Coasts, and The Light of the World.
He taught Lizzie Tuckett to draw, and she became an accomplished illustrator, as can be seen from her books on travels with the Tucketts in the Alps. According to the Courtauld Gallery in London, this is the only known picture by Hunt, in which he has applied the imprint of his signet ring (in red). The portrait can be seen in the Village Museum.  One of Lizzie's delightful sketches - "Crossing the Joch Pass to Engelberg" A copy of Lizzie's illustrated book, Zigzagging amongst the Dolomites, was sold by Bloomsbury Auctions on 21 October 2004, for a hammer price of £180. |
